CBoS Sets Deadline to Withdraw Old SDG 500 Notes

KHARTOUM — Fjaj

The Central Bank of Sudan (CBoS) has announced the withdrawal from circulation of all old SDG 500 banknotes across Sudan, including notes issued in 2023 and earlier.

The CBoS said the withdrawal will take effect on Oct. 1, 2026, and will run for three months until the close of business on Dec. 31, 2026, pursuant to Article 25(3) of the Central Bank of Sudan Act of 2002.

The bank said the move is part of the ongoing gradual currency replacement programme involving the SDG 1,000 and SDG 500 denominations, which began on Dec. 10, 2024. The current phase will cover the states of Kordofan and Darfur, which were not included in the previous two phases of the replacement programme.

The CBoS said holders of the affected banknotes may exchange them at face value during the designated period, exclusively by depositing the notes into bank accounts at branches of commercial banks operating in Kordofan and Darfur.

The bank stressed that, effective Jan. 1, 2027, the affected banknotes will cease to be legal tender throughout Sudan and will no longer be valid for settling financial obligations or conducting commercial transactions, without prejudice to the legal effects arising from previous announcements.

The CBoS urged the public, particularly residents of Kordofan and Darfur, to review the details of the announcement, comply with the specified deadlines and procedures, and promptly deposit any affected banknotes before the expiry of the designated period.
